Thus it begins...

Okay, that's a bit of a cheesy title. Actually, in all honesty, my quest for a better body has been an ongoing project for... hmm... I'll have to remove my shoes and socks to count that high. But it's been going on for a while. Like most people, I've struggled with weight issues most of my life, doing the crash/fad/flavor of the week diets, only to lose a few pounds and gain them back again and then some. So I've taken a much different approach to it this time around. First, I'm not doing any more fad diets. No carbs, low carbs, no sugar, low sugar... NO MORE! Who the hell can actually maintain that type of diet for any length of time? Well, not me, that's for sure. So I'm not subjecting myself with those stupid kinds of diets ever again. Instead I'm concentrating on three things: portion size, timing and exercise. I think everyone understands what portion size means. As to timing, basically it is how often I eat. I'm no longer consuming only three meals a day; Or one large meal a day; Or skipping meals; Or substituting a diet drink for a meal. Instead, I've been eating six to seven meals a day on or about the following times: 8am, 10am, Noon, 2pm, 4pm, 7pm, and 9pm. I'm limiting portion size and balancing out my proteins and carbs and not worrying about the fat or calories, so much as portion size. The main goal is to never feel hungry throughout the day. The secondary goal is to never be full. "Full" meaning I binge and totally stuff myself. But I'm sure we've all been there. I don't plan to be there again. Hmm… except maybe on Thanksgiving and Christmas… I’m gonna give myself those days.

Okay, so the second part of my plan for a better body is to exercise. As I mentioned earlier, I've been doing this "get in shape" thing on and off for some time, so I have a semi-regimented schedule for working out using free weights and doing cardio. In fact, I even have some muscle tone from the workouts I've been doing... unfortunately, it's covered by a layer of fat. So my goal is to tighten up my workout routine. Push myself a bit harder, but smarter. I'm increasing my cardio workout to twice a day. At least that's my goal. I'll maintain my regular free weights workout, which seem to be doing the trick in building lean muscle. Again my routine will more regimented, but not to the point of obsessiveness. If I miss a day of workout... so be it. I'll just jump back on routine the following day.

Which leads me to my final objective, which is to maintain a healthy mental attitude throughout this process. A healthy body is a life-long objective, so stressing one day to the next about "progress" or perceived "lack of progress" is pretty silly and counterproductive. Hey, believe me, I've beaten myself over the head a too many times about this sort of thing. It's taken me time to change my mental attitude in this regard, but I don't get down on myself anymore about what I eat and when I eat it. And believe me, I'm a lot happier and healthy for it.

Okay, so this is the beginning blog of my journey. Actually, it's the beginning of the sharing process, since I’m a few weeks on the path already, but today's as good a day as any to start to record it. So tune in. I'll post one to two pictures a day as a visual documentation of my progress and I'll share a little about my day and what's going on in my life. Lastly, I won’t be showing my face in the pics, in order to maintain a little anonymity. But it will be enough to inform and hopefully to inspire. Thanks for joining my venture.
